The issuance and filing of nomination papers for 1st phase of local bodies' elections continued on Tuesday as a large number of aspirant candidates thronged the offices of Returning Officers in City and Malir Courts Karachi.
The 1st phase of LBs polls to elect nazims, naib nazims and councillors of Union Councils is being held in 54 districts of country with 11 districts of Sindh including Karachi. The polling for 1st phase of LBs will be held on August 18, 2005.
Although, the issuance and filing of nomination papers continued simultaneously, the filing of papers was reported to be much higher than ones issued one day before the end of filing of nomination papers on July 20, 2005.
The exact figure of nomination papers filed could not be ascertained owing to extension of time for filing of nomination papers till 12:00 in night by the Election Commission on Tuesday in view of demand by the intending candidates.
However, the initial reports suggest that number of nomination papers filed may be between 2,500 to 3,000. The data provided by the Returning Officers shows that filing of nomination papers on Tuesday overwhelmed the number recorded on Monday.
A big crowd of intending candidates was witnessed in City and Malir Courts, which were thronged by candidates with a big number of their supporters to file nomination papers.
It is being expected that a big rush of intending candidates would be seen on July 20, the last date for submission of nomination papers.
According to election schedule, Returning Officers will invite the objections to the nomination papers on July 22 while their scrutiny will be carried out from July 23 to 24, 2005.
The candidates can file the appeals against rejection or acceptance of nomination papers on July 25 and those will be disposed of on July 27. Nominations can be withdrawn by July 28 and final list of the contestant candidates will be published on July 29.
