NEW YORK: US stocks opened sharply down Tuesday as the impasse over whether Greece should get new bailout funds kept markets across the globe under a cloud of doubt.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 132.59 points (1.24 percent) to 10,522.71 in the first minutes of trade.

The broader S&P 500 was off 13.44 (1.22 percent) at 1,085.79, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq lost 22.62 points (0.97 percent) to 2,313.21.

"Against this bearish backdrop, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is bracing for a third straight triple-digit drop, while the broader S&P 500 Index (SPX) is headed even deeper into annual-low territory," said Andrea Kramer of Schaeffer's Investment Research.
