First ever Bangladeshi judge fired over bribe

A Bangladeshi High Court judge accused of taking a bribe was fired Tuesday in the first case of its kind, an official said.
The order confirming the sacking of Justice Syed Shahidur Rahman was approved - with immediate effect - by Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and signed by the Bangladeshi president Tuesday, a spokesman for the law ministry said.
Corruption is a major electoral issue in Bangladesh where the government and the main opposition party regularly make claim and counter claim about the other's supposed inability to tackle the problem.
The spokesman told AFP: "The president has signed the order for the sacking of justice Rahman and the gazette notification to that effect is expected to be published today."
The move follows a case alleging bail fixing brought against Rahman by Supreme Court Bar Association president and barrister Rokanuddin Ahmed Mahmud.
