NEW YORK: US stocks opened higher Tuesday to extend the gains of the previous day on hopes that European governments are stepping up efforts to tackle the eurozone debt crisis.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average leaped 116.78 points (1.06 percent) to 11,160.64 in the first minute of trading.

The broader S&P 500 rose 14.61 points (1.26 percent) to 1,177.56, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite gained 46.57 points (1.85 percent) to 2,563.26.

The market action came after hopes for a eurozone debt resolution sparked big Wall Street rallies Monday that pushed the Dow up 2.5 percent.

"The market is awaiting the most recent developments on the European debt crisis and continues to gyrate on every headline," said Sameer Samana at Wells Fargo Advisors.
