FRANKFURT: German stocks acontinued to gain ground in early afternoon trading, rising by more than 4.0 percent amid hopes European leaders will reach an agreement to contain the debt crisis.

At around 1200 GMT, the blue-chip DAX 30 index was showing a gain of 229.54 points or 4.29 percent at 5,575.10 points, in line with higher stock markets around Europe.
