SYDNEY: Australian stocks surged 3.64 percent on Tuesday on hopes European officials will produce a plan to contain the eurozone's debt crisis.
At the close, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 was up 140.7 points at 4,004.6, taking its lead from an overnight rally on Wall Street.
The commodities-linked Australian dollar also rose and was trading at 99.00 US cents late in the session, up from 96.47 cents on Monday.
