TAIPEI: Taiwan stocks eased losses by midday on Monday, supported by financial plays , as investors tried to pull up the main share index in the last week of the third quarter.
"From a technical point of view this is the 34th week since the index corrected from 9,220 and there's a chance for it to turn better," said Jih Sun Investment Consulting's analyst Kevin Chung.
"In order for the index to do better in October, investors have to start buying this week."
At 0146 GMT, the main TAIEX index fell 0.55 percent, or 38.93 points to 7,007.29, after falling as much as 1.43 percent earlier.
The financial sub-index was one of the few gainers, rising 0.26 percent, with Cathay Financial Holding up 1.47 percent.
Electronics shares were down 0.3 percent. Computer maker Quanta gained 5.82 percent, while touch panel maker TPK Holding tumbled 4.56 percent after Goldman Sachs downgraded it to "sell" on concerns over over-supply.
Chemical counters were among the biggest losers, shedding 3.11 percent.
The Taiwan dollar weakened 0.67 percent to T$30.590.
