NEW YORK: Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated in the New York region on Tuesday and Wednesday, split generally along Arab and non-Arab lines.
While most mosques controlled by the Arabs followed Saudi Arabia in celebrating the Eid on Tuesday, the rest of the Muslim-American community waited for the Shawwal moon to be sighted in the United States and observed the joyous event on Wednesday.
Congregations on both days were largely attended. Special prayers were offered for unity among the ranks of Muslims and for the progress and prosperity of Islamic countries as well as for inter-faith harmony.
