Ban Ki-moon welcomes arrest of Goran Hadzic

Published Updated

ban-ki-moonUNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed Wednesday the arrest of Serbian Goran Hadzic, the Croatian Serb rebel leader and the last remaining fugitive wanted by the UN war crimes court in The Hague.

Ban spokesman Martin Nesirky said the secretary general "welcomes today's arrest" and "commends" Serbian President Boris Tadic and the Serbian authorities for their "leadership in ending impunity for those indicted for serious violations of international humanitarian law.

" Hadzic's apprehension sends a powerful message that those who are alleged to have committed such crimes cannot evade justice," said Nesirky, quoting Ban. Hadzic, 52, faces 14 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes for the murder of hundreds of civilians and the deportation of tens of thousands of Croats by troops under his command during the 1991-95 Croatian war.
