Zardari to visit Iran today to discuss regional situation

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari will visit Iran today (Saturday) to discuss expansion of bilateral relations and situation in the region including Afghanistan with the Iranian leadership.

During his stay in Teheran, he will hold talks with Iranian supreme leaders and others.

Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Mashallah Shakeri talking with Iranian media said that Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari during his visit will meet Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei and his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

“Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik will also accompany President Zardari in his Tehran visit”, he said.

The ambassador said that relations between Iran and Pakistan are very important for the stability of region and the Islamic world.

Shakeri said that Pakistan and Iran enjoy strong cultural, religious and historic relations.

He emphasized that cooperation between Iran and Pakistan and both countries want to strengthen and expand bilateral ties in various fields.

The Iranian ambassador called for more interaction between the two Muslim nations.

Shakeri added that Iran is pursuing active diplomacy to promote relationship with all countries for reaching peace and consensus on key regional and international issues.

Earlier Zardari had visited Iran to participate at an anti-terrorism conference in June 2011.
