NEW YORK: The S&P 500 jumped 1 percent as US stocks extended their gains on Tuesday on rising expectations that a default of Greek debt could be avoided.
A stronger-than-expected May existing home sales number also added to market optimism.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 82.91 points, or 0.69 percent, at 12,163.29. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 13.77 points, or 1.08 percent, at 1,292.13. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 43.83 points, or 1.67 percent, at 2,673.49.
