2011 'make or break year' for WTO Doha talks: Cameron

Published Updated

DAVOS: British Prime Minister David Cameron said Friday that 2011 is a "make or break year" on concluding the WTO Doha Round of talks for a global free trade pact.

"I know every speaker at events like this talks about concluding Doha as a matter of urgency, and I agree," he told political and economic elites gathered at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

"2011 is the make or break year," he added

Launched in the Qatari capital a decade ago, the Doha Round of talks have foundered amid disagreements between developed and developing nations on cuts to be imposed on tariffs of industrial goods and agriculture subsidies.

While speaking about the urgency of concluding the round, Cameron stuck to the developed nations' position, as he called for emerging markets accept deeper cuts on industrial goods.

He also urged agriculture producers to give "a little more".

"We all need to be equally clear about how it’s going to happen not with more warm words but with more on the table from all sides," said Cameron, in his first appearance in Davos as prime minister.

"No more stubbornness. No more hiding offers in back pockets," he urged.
