ISLAMABAD: With the advent of the holy month of Ramazan, the prices of everything linked to Iftar and Sehr are rising but for surprise to many, the prices of dates, a mandatory item for Iftar, have been stable which is a rare case in Pakistan.
The local markets are full of well known local and imported dates varieties as Ajwa, Arabian dates, Irani Rabai, Irani dry dates, Pakistani Aseel, Karblain, Shareefa and Mazafati.
The Irani Brown dates are being sold at Rs. 180 per Kg, local dates at Rs. 200 per kg, Black Irani date Rs. 240 per Kg, Mabroom dates Rs. 1200 per Kg and Ajwa at Rs. 2600 per Kg.
Though people in numbers are witnessed flocking at the shops to purchase different varieties of dates, the most demanding commodity of the holy month, the prices of dates have not witnessed a surge.
"The secret of no raise in dates prices is that the dates have been stored in a huge quantity as the export of this item did not pick momentum last year," Nadeem Ahmed, a whole-sale vendor for dates told APP.
He said that new dates from Sindh had also started and a huge supply is expected to come by the end of the month.
A shop keeper told APP that what he sells dates the whole year and he sells pretty much the same amount during the holy month. "We expects to sell hundred of kilograms of dates in the next days.
A health expert told APP that dates are used to break the fast as they boost the immune system and are full of fiber.
Date flesh provides carbohydrates, proteins, ash, and fat. It contains unsaturated farry acids that include palmitoleic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids. It also provide vitamin A, C, B1, B2, folic acid and nicotinic acid, he added.
