MULTAN: National Accountability Bureau Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry said on Friday that eradication of corruption was a national duty and the NAB was committed to recover looted money from corrupt elements and deposit it into the national exchequer.
He made these remarks while addressing officers during his farewell visit to the NAB Multan.
The chairman said that he spent valuable time at the NAB as its chairman and took steps to rejuvenate the apex anti-corruption body for eradication of corruption. He described corruption as the mother of all evils.
He said the PILDAT, Transparency International, and World Economic Forum appreciated Pakistan for the new initiatives taken by the NAB under his tenure.
He said that under his guidance and supervision, the NAB perfected its procedures to make it more effective and proactive in order to come up to expectations of the nation.
Today, the NAB was absolutely committed to root out corruption in all its forms and manifestations with an iron hand, he added.
He said the NAB performance remained excellent in comparison to other anti-corruption organizations.
Qamar Zaman lauded NAB officers/officials for performing duties in odd hours with absolute professional approach, maintaining transparency and according to law.
He said the NAB recovered almost Rs 50 billion during last four years from corrupt elements and deposited in the national exchequer and described it as a record achievement.
Since its inception, the NAB has recovered Rs 290 billion and deposited in national exchequer which is indicative of hard work, dedication, professionalism and transparency in all ranks of NAB officers/officials in an atmosphere of renewed energy and dynamism.
Qamar Zaman said that today NAB was the chairman of SAARC Anti Corruption Forum and the only organization in the world with whom China had signed an MoU to streamline cooperation in the field of anti-corruption and to oversee projects to be undertaken under CPEC.
He said the NAB had established its first forensic science laboratory (FSL) in Islamabad which had facilities of digital forensics, questioned documents and fingerprint analysis.
He said the NAB had rationalised its workload and timelines had been prescribed for efficient, effective, and expeditious disposal of cases putting a maximum limit of 10 months to complete all processes ie complaint verification,inquiry, investigations and finally filing reference with the NAB court.
The NAB has also introduced a new system of Combine Investigation Team (CIT) in order to benefit from experience and collective wisdom of senior supervisory officers. The CIT comprises a director, additional director, investigation officer and a senior legal counsel. Not only will it bring quality to the work but would ensure that no single individual can influence the proceedings.
He appreciated the performance of NAB Multan and urged officers of all ranks to work more diligently and honestly to curb corruption.
DG NAB Multan Atiq Ur Rahman, in his welcome address, said that NAB Multan had been successful in bringing social and cultural change to palpable extent in society within a short span of two years. "Processing of 5,200 complaints was an evidence of our success story," he added.
He said that NAB Multan conducted 356 complaint verifications, 121 inquiries, 58 investigations and recovered Rs 1,392 million in cash and Rs 81.15 million indirect recoveries besides retrieval of hundreds of plots and state land.
Earlier, upon his arrival at NAB Multan, the chairman NAB reviewed a guard of honour.
