We all love eating cake, because of its amazing taste, beautiful decoration, and yummy flavour. The lip-smacking dessert is the best selling baked desert around the world. These are made with the measured combination of flour, butter, sugar, eggs and baking powder. Frosting or decorative items such as flowers, alphabets, shapes, fruits, laceworks, and scrollwork make cakes pleasant and delectable.
Who made the first cake?
The history of cakes goes a long way back. The credit of making the first cake goes to the ancient Egyptians who were masters of baking. They had bakeries where they had cakes in the form of small sweet bread loaf. These cakes were different from what we have today. They used yeast to raise the cake. The dough mixed with honey and dry fruits. They baked in stone made oven. The Oxford English Dictionary traces the English word cake back to the 13th century.
The first official oven recorded in history was built in France, in 1490. It was made of brick and tile. During the 18th century, European bakers used beaten eggs to make cakes. However, it took hours to get desired consistency of eggs. The Greeks had a form of cheesecake and the Romans developed early versions of fruitcakes with raisins, nuts and other fruits. In 19th century, bakers replaced yeast with baking powder and baking soda for a greater rising power with less effort. Today's versions of oven, moulds, and baking tools have made cake making easy and simple.
DELICIOUS CAKE FLAVOURS: BLACK FOREST CAKE:
This yummy cake was originated during the 16th century in the black forest region of Germany. It consists of two to four layers of chocolate sponge cakes filled with whipped cream and red cherries. The top is decorated with additional whipped cream, cherries, and chocolate shavings or flacks.
COFFEE CAKE:
This coffee flavoured cake with coffee butter cream frosting is a favourite winter teatime dessert. Some coffee cakes are glazed, or left plain. It was first made by the Danish bakers during the 17th century. The classic coffee cake is not layered or decorated with fancy items. Trendy coffee cake consists of two layers, separated by coffee flavour cream and walnuts.
CHOCOLATE CAKE:
This is the most popular cake among children of all ages. The sponge cake is flavoured with melted chocolate, cocoa powder, or both. Some cakes are made with the combination of white and dark chocolates. This cake is available in a variety of flavours such as chocolate fudge, chocolate malt, chocolate butter cream, double layers chocolate, white chocolate, mocha java mousse, chocolate cheese and chocolate banana etc.
CHIFFON CAKE:
This light and spongy dessert was created in 1927 by Harry Baker. The baker kept his recipe secret for two decades. He baked and sold this luxury cake only to Hollywood stars of that time. It is made by the cake batter, which typically includes oil (not butter), flour, baking powder, and sugar. The batter is then covered by stiff peak meringue, which is made by beating of six to 12 egg whites with cream of tartar, sugar, and salt.
BAKED ALASKA:
It is said that during the 19th century president of the United States Thomas Jefferson have presented first time ice cream enclosed in hot pastry at a White House dinner party. Baked Alaska is one of the easy to make baking item. Set the heavy layer of your favorite ice cream on a prepared cake and then covered well with meringue then set to freezer for 2 hours. Bake the Alaska on the preheated oven just for 8 to 10 minutes or until meringue is slightly browned. Yummy baked Alaska is ready to eat.
RAINBOW CAKE:
This colourful and showstopper cake never fails to make your friends smile. To make rainbow cake, the cake batter is divided into seven bowels. Orange, red, blue, yellow, green, pink and purple colours are added in each bowel separately. These coloured mixtures are then baked in tins until a skewer poked into the middle comes out clean. These coloured sponges are placed on one another and covered with cream cheese or whipped cream frosting.
KITKAT CAKE:
This awesome and mouth-watering cake has became first choice for every kid nowadays. The cake begins with a chocolate cake surrounded by KitKat bars, wrapped with a ribbon, and topped with your favorite bunties. To make it all you have to do is take your favorite cake recipe, bake and let it cool. Take a bunch of KitKat bars (about 4 large packages), cut, or gently break each bar into two sections. Place the bars on the cake, gently pushing into the frosting. Tie with a ribbon and fill the center with colourful bunties.
POUND CAKE:
The pound cake gets this name because of how it is made. The original recipe included pound each of flour, sugar, butter, and eggs. You can enjoy your teatime with simple pound, fruit pound, marble pound, or chocolate pound cake.

A birthday party is not a party without cake. During the 14th century, bakeries in Germany started selling birthday cakes. In 17th century, cakes decorated with icing sugar and edible flowers were made in European countries for the birthday parties of the wealthy families. Each year people around the world welcome the New Year with the special New Year cakes. During New Year eve, the bakeries are filled with pineapple cream, butterscotch, rich velvety chocolate, almond cheese cakes.
INDEPENDENCE DAY CAKES:
People all around the world celebrate their independence day with cakes and sweets. In Pakistan, children love to cut green themed cakes on 14th August, to celebrate birthday of their beloved country. The most popular Independence Day cakes are rectangle Pakistan flag cake, round flag cake with white border, Pakistan star cup cake, and round cake with Pakistan zindabad text.
