The Punjab Provincial Development Working Party (PPDWP) has approved Rs 3 billion for land acquisition and construction of boundary wall for "construction of wastewater treatment plants at Mehmood Booti, Shahdbagh & Shahdara, Lahore" and "construction of surface water treatment plant at BRBD canal to implement directions of the Supreme Court. The approval was given in a special meeting of PPDWP presided over by the Chairman P&D Muhammad Jahanzeb Khan here on Thursday.
It is worth mentioning that hearing a sou moto notice the Supreme Court had directed Punjab government to install treatment plants as 540 million gallon untreated water was being dumped into the River Ravi on the daily basis. The chief justice had questioned why the government became active in resolving an issue only when the courts intervened whereas they (PML-N and Shehbaz Sharif) had been in the government for past 10 years in Punjab but had not bothered to install water treatment plants.
