Scope of migration & diaspora: academics must focus on panel & primary data surveys: Dr Ishrat
Former Governor State Bank of Pakistan Dr Ishrat Husain said that academics should focus on panel and primary data surveys to get deeper insights into the scope of the migration and diaspora. He was addressing the book launching ceremony of the book 'The Pakistani Diaspora: Corridors of Opportunity and Uncertainty' organized by Center on International Migration, Remittances, and Diaspora (CIMRAD) Lahore School of Economics.
He also said that the book is being published at a time of mounting debate over the future of international migration and ensuing anxiety among migrants. He said that Lahore School of Economics is pioneer in bringing migration and diaspora studies into light.
Dr Shahid Amjad, Rector of the Lahore School of Economics, in his concluding remarks, suggested that Pakistan must develop safe and secure mechanisms to foster foreign investments and trade in Pakistan.
Dr Rashid Amjad, Professor of Economics, and Director of Center on International Migration, Remittances, and Diasporas (CIMRAD) and editor of the book, said in his address: this volume breaks new ground in many respects. It does not merely analyze the growth of diaspora in a historical context, but also provides valuable insights into the cost and benefits of migration, social remittances, and engagement of their families in the new host country and the families they leave behind.
The seminar was also addressed by Dr Abdul Waheed (Representative of the World Bank), Professor Dr Nasra Shah from University of the Kuwait, and Professor Dr Fareeha Zafar from Lahore School of Economics.
