UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon has condemned the bomb attack on a Shia mosque in Pakistan, which has reportedly killed at least 58 people. "The Secretary-General is appalled by such vicious targeting of people on account of their religious affiliation," said a statement issued by Ban's spokesperson.
Ban Ki-moon also called upon the authorities to redouble their efforts to protect religious and ethnic minorities in Pakistan and to combat terrorism in all its forms, said the statement. A suicide bomber on Friday hit the Imambargah in Shikarpur district, killing at least 58 people and injuring 50 others.
The US Mission in Pakistan has also strongly condemned the suicide attack and extended deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims. "The United States stands in solidarity with the people and Government of Pakistan in confronting this type of extremist violence," the US embassy said. "The United States supports the right of every person to practice their religion without fear of intimidation, death, coercion, or any form of reprisal - this is a basic human right, both in Pakistan and throughout the world." The European Union delegation strongly condemned the terrorist attack at a central imambargah in Shikarpur.
