Augmentation of drinking water: JICA to provide Rs four billion to WASA

The Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) will provide a grant of Rs 4billion to Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) for augmentation of Drinking Water in Faisalabad. An Agreement between JICA and Punjab Government will be signed at Lahore on Thursday, February 23, 2012, at a High-Level Meeting to be attended by the JICA Team Members, Secretary Housing Punjab, Secretary Planning and Development and Managing Director of WASA.
Disclosing this, Syed Zahid Aziz, Managing Director, WASA, told Newsmen here on Tuesday that at present the WASA is supplying 6.5 crore gallons of drinking water per day to the citizens of Faisalabad but after adding 2 crore gallons a day under the JICA Programme, the per-day supply of drinking water will be increased up to 8.5 crore gallons which would cater the need for 10 lac additional consumers. This Project, he added, would be completed within next few months after getting final approval of the Japan Government with courteous JICA.
Responding to a question that whether the WASA would increase the Water Supply and Sewerage Rates after accomplishment of the drinking water and sewerage project of the JICA, Syed Zahid Aziz, told that the WASA would not enhance the Water Supply and Sewerage Rates despite these added facilities but they will overcome the loss by adding additional 10 lac consumers.
