Air Marshal Rao Qamar Suleiman, the chief of Pakistan Air Force, (PAF), is due to retire on March 18 and the media is rife with speculations as to who will replace him. The question is not who would replace Air Marshal Suleiman, but the issue is who should replace him? The logical answer to the question is, of course, a competent, dedicated professional and astute leader, with a clear vision, commitment to excellence, with unblemished track record and outstanding service credentials should be the next air chief.
Media reports, in the matter, also allude to possible grant of 'service extension' to the incumbent, Air Marshal Rao Qamar Suleiman, is also being considered by the ruling coalition as an option. The question here is, should Air Marshal Suleiman be given the 'extension', will the extension be in legitimate order or a good practice, palatable to the deserving candidates, waiting in the queue for their turn, how will it impact on the overall morale of the personnel of the air force, finally and more importantly, does Air Marshal Suleiman deserve a service extension?
Have the extensions in service given to other senior armed forces personnel, enhanced national defences to any degree of satisfaction, improved performance of armed forces, increased trust and confidence of the nation in the present military leadership?
