Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association (PVMA) closed all ghee and cooking oil mills across the country on Saturday following burning of four National Logistic Cell (NLC) tankers carrying consignments of edible oil from Port Qasim. According to an announcement of the PVMA here, all 95 ghee and cooking oil mills have closed their gates and stopped production of ghee and cooking oil.
Ghee industry of Pakistan is in the grip of organised gang of extortionist and transport/ tanker mafia, which has paralysed the transportation of imported edible oil from Port Qasim, Karachi to upcountry destinations. The burning of four NLC tankers loaded with edible oil worth Rs 30 million by tanker mafia on February 17, 2012 have created a wave of fear and uncertainty among manufacturers.
The tanker mafia has also flouted the judgement of Sindh High Court, Karachi dated February 15, 2012. Resultantly the ghee mills of Pakistan have closed down their units wef February 18, 2012 for an indefinite period. To show solidarity with judiciary, NLC, Government of Pakistan and in our own interest the closure of industry will continue till such time protection is assured, PVMA added.
