A roadside bomb exploded near a patrolling convoy of the Afghan national army in south-eastern Afghanistan, killing nine soldiers and injuring four others, a government spokesman said Sunday. The soldiers were searching for a bomb hidden by the insurgents under a bridge in Zurmat district when the explosion occurred, Rohullah Samoon, spokesman for the governor of Paktia province said.
"Nine army soldiers died unfortunately and four were injured in the explosion," he said. The incident took place late Saturday in Sahak area of the Zurmat district in south-eastern province that borders Pakistan. The insurgents in Afghanistan have stepped up attacks and use of the roadside bombs, which is killer number one among Afghan and foreign forces.
On Saturday, Nato-led forces claimed that a top leader of the Haqqani terror network was arrested by Afghan and coalition forces in Jani Khel district of the same province.
