One of the leading causes of death among adults in this part of the world where we live is heart disease. Cardiac diseases are among the greatest public health challenges of our time, which are common, costly, disabling and deadly.
People should regularly get their complete heart check-up to avoid possible heart diseases, said Senior Consultant Cardiologist and Head Cardiology Division Shifa International Hospital Dr Habib ur Rahman, while addressing the participants of a seminar organised by Shifa International Hospital to celebrate World Heart Day here on Tuesday.
Cardiac Surgeon Dr Tauqeer Akbar also gave his presentation on new technology in cardiac surgery. Senior consultants, physicians, surgeons, post graduate trainees, medical students, patients and large number of people from all walks of life attended the timely conceived informatory seminar to mark the day.
While addressing on the topic of 'atherosclerosis', a disease in which an artery wall thickens as a result of the accumulation of fatty materials such as cholesterol, Dr Habib stressed on the need to ensure blood cholesterol level is under control in patients. He said that a specific amount of cholesterol is necessary for human body but when it exceeds from the required level, it created atherosclerotic plaques, resultantly the plaque obstacles smooth blood flow and causes clotting of the blood in artery. "It is very serious condition disturbed blood flow results in heart attack that can be fatal too," he warned.
He urged the masses to keep an eye on their blood cholesterol level. He said that if one has diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking habit with low or minimal physical activity and excessive salt intake, he or she is on high risk and he or she must modify lifestyle and must adopts dietary habits to avoid serious complications. He suggested that one should be very careful in consuming fats and salt, as they were the two main causes of increasing cholesterol level and blood pressure.
Consult Cardiac Surgeon Dr Tauqeer Akbar said that with the current drive to minimise access and the size of surgical incision, there have been new advances in cardiac surgery where the cardiac surgeon performs the operation using endoscopic technology. In addition, robotic cardiac surgery is becoming more common in the world.-PR
