Sindh Government has requested Election Commission of Pakistan to extend the last date for updating voters lists by least one and half months so that no person especially from flood affected areas of Sindh is left unregistered.
"We have requested Election Commission (EC) to extend the target time for revision of voters lists in Sindh for two months or one and half months in view of displacement of people due to floods", informed Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah during a media briefing at CM House here on Sunday after presiding over Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sindh Council session. He said around 81 million people were affected and displaced by the recent torrential rains and the resultant flood affecting mainly 13 districts of the province.
In such a hostile environment, it would be very difficult for the staff detailed for the purpose to complete the task within the given time. Meanwhile, he said, 95 percent of the Government efforts are focused on the relief and rehabilitation of the flood affectees. To another query, he said the government was trying its best to ensure transparency and seriousness in registering the people for new voters lists, which is very important for the credibility of the next elections to be held on the completion of five year tenure of the present PPP-led government. President Asif Ali Zardari is determined to hold fair and transparent general elections on time, the Chief Minister added.
