A delegation of Pakistani exporters, which is proceeding to India on September 26, under leadership of Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim, will explore opportunities for removing barriers with regard to export of Pakistani products to India. Pakistani exporters have reservations over trade with India especially with regard to clearance of their consignment and the role of middle man there, Commerce Secretary Commerce Zafar Mahmood, said.
He said this while talking to media after visiting the exhibition organised by Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design (PIFD) here on Wednesday. Principal and CEO PIFD Hina Tayaba Khalil, Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Michal Delaney were also present on the occasion.
Zafar said that Pakistan will float a proposal during upcoming visit to India for deploying a Pakistani custom official in India who will help the Pakistani exporters in clearing their consignment. Currently, he said the trade balance is in favour of India and we need to remove the psychological barriers to put the balance in our favour.
There exists huge potential for Pakistani products in the Indian market because it is one of the world largest emerging middle class markets. Pakistani halal products are in heavy demand in India because of a large number of Muslim population. Likewise, India can be a big market for Pakistani textile products especially clothes and bed linen, he added. Pakistan can import machinery from India, he added.
Zafar stressed the need of close liaison between the chambers of commerce and industries of the two countries for enhancing the trade. He said there must be a close liaison between Mumbai and Karachi Chambers of Commerce and Delhi and Lahore Chambers of Commerce. He further said that purpose of the US delegation visit is to see the prospects of future collaboration between the Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design and the American institutes. He said that second round of talks of 5th Round of Trade and TIFA talks are going on in Islamabad.
