Indus Water Treaty: CJP urged to direct government to make public documents

The Pakistan Muttahida Kisan Mahaz/Pakistan Water and Power Action Committee on Monday urged the Chief Justice of Pakistan to direct the government to make public the documents of Indus Water Treaty singed between India and Pakistan.
Addressing a function titled "Indus Water Treaty 1960 Stakeholders Conference" Muhammad Ayub Khan Mayo, President Muttahida Kisan Mahaz (PMKM) said that India is violating the Indus Water Basin Treaty to destroy the irrigation system of Pakistan.
He said that India was violating the Indus Water Basin Treaty by constructing dams on rivers flowing to Pakistan so as to destabilise Pakistan by inflicting a water crisis in Pakistan, while some of the local political parties are politicising the construction of mega dams like Kala Bagh and Basha.
Mayo condemned the move of India to rob Pakistan of the water of three important rivers - Ravi, Bias, and Sutlaj - and expressed concern over why Pakistan government has not timely responded to it and is still silent over the issue. He urged the government to settle the water conflict with India via dialogue immediately, or else India will block the water of all the rivers that irrigate Pakistan's agricultural land. He also warned that if Pakistan did not construct mega water reservoirs in coming years a drought like situation will erupt in the country. Pakistan's economy is totally dependent on agricultural and by potentially blocking the water of three important rivers - Indus, Chenab, and Jehlum as well as constructing dams on these rivers the neighbouring country is violating Indus Water Treaty.
To create awareness among Pakistani farmers, on the issue of India's threatening moves on river water that irrigates Pakistan's land, Mayo announced his organisation would arrange a series of seminars, conferences, and gatherings involving farmers throughout the country.
Regarding the Indian activities as 'economic terrorism', he suggested that the issue need to be raised internationally in order to save Pakistan's irrigation system from Indian exploitation. The event was attended by a large number of representatives of the farmers, gathered from across the country.
