Electricity shortfall between demand and supply again rose to 3,500MW on Monday almost double in two days due to increased demand and decreased power generation especially by the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) Pakistan Electric Power Co (PEPCO) spokesman told newsmen that WAPDA's hydro-power generation houses at Tarbela, Mangla, Warsak, Ghazi Barotha, etc, are producing maximum 6,615MW cheap electricity which is more than 50 percent of the total power production of the country.
This is due to the reason that there is more than sufficient water running in the three power generating rivers Indus, Jhelum and Kabul to get highest production. Energy sector experts told this scribe that the government has still not fully resolved the lingering issue of payment of outstanding dues of billions of rupees to the IPPs who had threatened to close down their plants leading to massive load shedding in the country.
They said that IPPs have already reduced their production from about 7,000MW to 5,000MW, a net loss of 2,000MW in their contribution to the national grid. PEPCO spokesman said that PEPCO's hydro-, thermal-, IPPs and RPPs power houses produced 13,014MW electricity, hydro 6,615MW, thermal 1,178MW, RPPs 5,088MW and RPPs 133MW. He said the electricity demand has risen to 16,509MW, an increase of about 1,300MW against Saturday's demand of 15,199MW. PEPCO supplied 680MW electricity to KESC.
