For the first time in one jail record number of 1000 convicts and under trial prisoners of Central Jail Sahiwal will appear in middle and primary exams next month.
Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Lahore Region Mirza Shahid Saleem Baig told APP here on Sunday that on the special directive of Chief Minister Punjab, Prisons Department had prepared a master plan for the reformation of all prisoners.
He said that the main objective of the plan is to make all out efforts to transform the lives of all prisoners and help them become "responsible citizen" after their release.
"First time 10 centres manned by educated convicts under pilot project are successfully teaching the inmates in jail with the support of local district government which has also provided part time teachers and books for six-month course". He said each centre is consisting of at least 25 to 30 prisoners.
DIG said that all the literacy centres are functioning under the direct supervision of Superintendent Jail, Kamran Anjum who is ensuring proper teaching and effective monitoring of plan. He said Deputy Superintendents Mazhar Waheed Chaudhary, Sh Ikram and Assistant Superintendent Jail (Education) would ensure the attendance and discipline of all prisoners daily from 8: am to 2:pm with half an hour break.
Mirza Shahid Saleem Baig said that after its successful experiments, this network would be expanded to all other central Jails throughout the province. About the remission on the successful completion of the course, he said that successful prisoners will be granted to 2 to 4 months special education remission in their imprisonment subject to their entitlement as per jail manual rules.
