The crew of a private TV channel on Monday urged Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to order the relevant departments to provide security to their lives and properties. Zahid Essa, Islamabad Bureau Chief of Awaz TV said that he was on a routine visit to Karachi Office with his camera man and other supporting staff when he got a tip that a robber was caught in Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Park.
On his direction the camera man captured the movement of more than 5 to 6 Rangers coming out of their van and after torturing Sarfaraz Shah opened fire on him. He (Sarfaraz) begged for life but was not spared. Essa contended in the appeal that he and his staffers were under stress following life threats whereas the Channel was also facing immense pressure.
He prayed before the SC to ensure protection of their lives, properties. Meanwhile, President Supreme Court Bar Association, Asma Jehangir offered the association's co-operation to plead the case of Awaz TV staffers in the apex court free of cost and also retained a copy of the footage for protection purpose.
