The work on the 'Chilli Market' in Kunri would start in the first week of December as the Sindh government has finalised and approved PC-1 of the Rs 195.878 million project. According to sources in Sindh Agriculture Department on Tuesday, the document has been approved by Sindh Planning and Development Department Additional Chief Secretary Ghulam Serwar Khero.
The market would be one of the largest chilli markets in Asia. Sources said that funds would be provided by Sindh government from Annual Development Program (ADP) 2007-08, and the amount would be recovered from the beneficiaries (shopkeepers) in easy instalments. On completion timeframe sources said The market would take around three years to be completed from December 2007 to December 2010.
Sources said as a goodwill gesture Taluka Nazim Mohammad Jam Memon had volunteered 22 acres of his land for construction of the market, which is called "Mirch Mandi" in traditional terms. When completed, the Chilli Market would have remarkable impact on the country's chilli exports besides generating economic activities in Kunri.
Besides other stakeholders, growers would be direct beneficiaries as they would have easy access to the market. The market would be built by the Services and Works Department of Sindh Government and would be a modern centre of trade for all sorts of chillies, sources added.
