imageBUDAPEST: Hungary may export up to 200,000 tonnes of wheat to China in the next three years under an agreement between Shanghai-based Chi Fu Eurotrading and its Chinese partners, the ministry of agriculture said in a statement on Friday.

Chi Fu Eurotrading, which has a Hungarian subsidiary, sent a 20-tonne shipment of wheat to China late last year, the first such shipment since signing a bilateral export agreement in 2006, it said.

The agreement holds "further possibilities" for wheat exports to China from Hungary, the statement added. Hungary produces about 5 million tonnes of wheat per year.

A bout of severely cold weather is expected to reduce wheat output in Europe in 2017, including Hungary, consultancy Strategie Grains said on Thursday.
