The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has awarded a mobile phone operating licence to Warid Telecom International (LLC) of the United Arab Emirates, commission officials said on December 7.
"Warid was selected because of their competitive call charge, quick rollout plan and promise to invest in other sectors in Bangladesh," a senior official with the BTRC, who declined to be named, told Reuters.
WTI will be sixth mobile telephone operator in Bangladesh.
Warid will have to deposit $89 million as fees and charges to BTRC, officials said.
