White House gives cautious welcome to jobs report

Published Updated

whitehouseWASHINGTON: The White House on Friday cautiously welcomed news that the US economy created more jobs than expected, saying unemployment levels remained too high and there was an urgent need for Congress to pass more stimulus.

"The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 9.1 percent, a level that is unacceptably high," said Katharine Abraham, a member of President Barack Obama's Council of Economic Advisers.

The US economy created 103,000 jobs in September, the Labor Department reported Friday, a much stronger clip than expected.

"Despite a slowdown in economic growth from substantial headwinds experienced throughout the year, the economy has added private sector jobs for 19 straight months, for a total of 2.6 million jobs over that period."

Obama has called on Congress to pass a $447 billion jobs bill which he says could create 1.9 million posts, but faces stiff opposition from Republican foes.

"Clearly, we need faster economic growth to put Americans back to work. Today's report underscores the president's call for Congress to pass the American Jobs Act," said Abraham.
