Published September 25, 2011 Updated September 25, 2011 09:03am

electricityISLAMABAD: The electricity deficit in the country on Sunday further soared to 4,390 MW from 3,801 MW compelling Pakistan Electric Supply Company (PEPCO) to carry out eight to ten hours power load-shedding in urban and rural areas respectively.

According to the brief on daily power generation and load-management,the total power generation was recorded as 12,889 MW against the demand of 17,279 MW during the last 24 hours.

The hydel generation stood at 6,164 MW, WAPDA thermal 1,307 MW, IPPs 5,298 MW and Renal 120 MW.

As many as 710 MW was supplied to Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), the report added.

The consumers were also facing brunt of un-scheduled load-management due to surging power shortfall to 4,390 MW. The Tarbela and Mangla dams had attained their maximum conservation level of 1550 feet and 1210 feet respectively.

The power demand has also increased due to rising of mercury in the country.

Meanwhile, the Central Power Purchase Agency (CPAA) has filed a petition with National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to increase in power tariff by Rs.3.06 per unit.

NEPRA official said that the CPPA has asked for raise in power tariff for the month of August, under the head of monthly fuel adjustment mechanism.

The power distribution companies (Discos) sold 8,875 MW at a cost of Rs57.40 billion in the said month.

He said the NEPRA had fixed the fuel price at Rs3.60 per unit whereas original fuel cost on one unit of electricity got registered at Rs6.42 per unit.
