MEXICO CITY: The Mexican army has uncovered an underground drug-making laboratory in the western state of Jalisco and seized 130 tons of chemicals for making synthetic drugs, the defense ministry said.
Soldiers found the chemicals earlier this week on a farm in the town of Zapotlanejo, about 530 kilometers (330 miles) northwest of the Mexican capital, the ministry said on its website Friday.
The military team seized 130 tons of chemicals and 180 kilos (400 pounds) of half-finished narcotics, as well as drug-making equipment, it said.
The statement did not mention if anyone had been detained, nor did it suggest who might have been running the drugs lab, which local media said was discovered following an anonymous tip.
The lab was the biggest found in three years in Jalisco state, the capital of which is Mexico's third-largest city Guadalajara, according to local media.
In July, the army seized about 800 tons of chemicals for making synthetic drugs in the central state of Queretaro.
Worldwide drug consumption is moving away from cocaine and opiates and increasingly towards synthetic drugs, according to the 2010 UN World Drug Report.
