ISLAMABAD: Around 20,000 families in four districts of flood-hit Sindh province have been provided one month ration during last one week.
The World Food Programme (WFP), which has initially targeted five districts in the province, will also start distributing ration in Tharparkar from Friday, Communication Officer of WFP Amjad Jamal said.
Talking to APP on Thursday, he said currently the process of distribution was continuing in four districts where so far around 1700 ton ration had been provided. The most flood- affected districts were Badin, Mirpur Khas, Nawabshah and Sanghar.
"Our target of providing one month ration is 0.5 million which WFP will continue till facilitation of last family," he said and added that in every district distribution points had been established.
He said the list of affected families was prepared before time so that transparency could be ensured.
Amjad Jamal said a new warehouse hasdbeen established in Umarkot with a storage capacity of some 1500 metric tons, taking the number of such facilities in the province to nine.
He said that WFP would continue to monitor accessible conditions across the affected areas and take necessary measures to reach isolated populations.
He said in Balochistan, a rapid needs assessment of damage and assistance requirements at the village level was now underway. The exercise was being jointly conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), WFP and UN Office for Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
All flood affected districts in the province will be covered by assessment teams, comprising staff from both UN agencies and other partners.
