imageKARACHI: City administration has fined 108 retailers of Rs 0.55 million and arrested five other for fleecing citizens and violating the officially approved price lists of edible items, said a Karachi Commissioner office's spokesman on Friday.

Sharing details of the action taken against profiteers, hoarders and adulterators by the assistant commissioners and magistrates during past 24 hours, the official said 38 milk sellers, 11 green grocers, 48 grocers, 6 fruit sellers and 6 chicken sellers were challaned during the exercise.

The spokesman mentioned that despite being a holiday the markets remained opened on Thursday and the administration pertaining to different districts in the city ensured to keep a vigil so as to protect the rights of consumers regarding price as well as quality of food goods.

He said five of the shopkeepers who were repeatedly registered to be violating the price list were also jailed by the concerned magistrates of the area.

The official said the campaign initiated on the directives of the Karachi Commissioner, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui will be continued, on daily basis, till the menace is eradicated and consumers' rights are protected in the truest sense.
