KARACHI: Chairman , All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has urged the government to provide uninterrupted supply of energy to industry especially to reap the benefits of GSP-plus.
The generalized system of preferences ( GSP-plus) facility granted to Pakistan by European Union has started showing positive results. Pakistan's textile exports for the period of July 2013 to April 2014 have increased by more than 6.5 percent compared to the corresponding period of the last year.
In a statement here on Friday, Chairman APTMA said that although textile exports for the month of April 2014 were lower by 6.08 compared to April 2013. However , it would grasp the momentum gradually by absorbing the negative repercussions of sudden appreciation of Pak Rupee.
There is an impressive growth in exports of value-added textiles in quantitative terms during the month of April 2014, he added.
He said that large scale increase in import of textile machinery (about 60%) during July 2013 to April 2014 as compared to the corresponding period of the last year shows that business community engaged in textile sector are serious to avail the facility of GSP-plus by increasing their production capacity.
Had we not been facing shortage of energy in the country, our exports could have been increased further at least by 10 percent as our buyers are shifting towards our competitors in the region.
Chairman APTMA stressed that there is a dire need for keeping the industry fully operational and the government should ensure seven days a week uninterrupted supply of electricity and gas to the industry to produce exportable surplus.
APTMA had envisaged new investments to achieve its vision of doubling textile exports from $13 billion to $26 in five years, he said.
