NATO appoints Pontecorvo as new representative for Afghanistan

(Karachi) NATO’s Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has announced the appointment of Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo as NATO’s next Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, TOLOnews reported.
Ambassador Pontecorvo will take up his post on June 1, 2020. He replaces Sir Nicholas Kay, whose posting has came to an end in Afghanistan.

Pontecorvo brings a long-standing diplomatic experience, including in Afghanistan and the broad regional context. He is an Italian national and had served as Italy’s ambassador to Pakistan.
The responsibility of NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan involves carrying forward the Alliance’s political-military objectives in Afghanistan, representing the political leadership of the Alliance in Kabul officially and publicly.
He also liaises with the Afghan government, civil society, representatives of the international community and neighbouring countries.
