ISLAMABAD: Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Dr Nadeem-ul-Haq said that the research by local academia could be helpful in developing better policies for resolving the issues facing the country.

Speaking at a conference, titled "Increasing Productivity and Unleashing Growth in Pakistan", organized by The Pakistan Strategy Support Program (PSSP), Dr Nadeem-ul-Haq said the research for the solution of any problem should come from down rather than from the top management.

"The local institutions and academia should be involved for the research on every sector including energy crisis, agriculture and poverty in the country", he added.

Haq said that even the Islamabad-based research was not so effective as it was done in the Jamshoro, Sialkot and any other area of the country where there was a dire need of it.

"It is job of the hard-working not as easy as many people are thinking which can help the policy makers to decide how to get the best options implemented for solving the problems", he remarked.

Deputy Chairman stated that the markets needed to be researched socio- economically instead of the economically and adding that the social aspects would also not be ignored while doing research in the country.

"180 proposal had been received and we are in the process to short-list of the proposals for awards", Dr. Nadeem-ul-Haq further said while appreciating the students.

Director, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Dr. Paul Dorosh said that the issues could be resolved by working hard and together and adding that the rethinking and redefining of all problem could be more helpful.

"We can support you especially what can be done the for your country but not implement the policy or any other things which were not in our the domain", he said.

Media Coordinator (PSSP), Ehtisham said that the project was designed to coordinate between the government and local academia by involving them for the better research and adding that research would be helpful for the policy-makers of the country.

"As many as 225 researchers including students and teachers are selected across the country and of total, 85 per cent representation was given to the remote area's academia and institutions from Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber PakhtunKhawa and Punjab", he added.
