ISLAMABAD: According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan, 77pc Pakistanis claim that they do not smoke cigarettes; among those who say they do not smoke, many have relatives or coworkers who do smoke.

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked, “Do you smoke cigarettes?” In response, 17pc said that they do, 77pc said that they do not, and a mere 6pc said that they did not know or did not wish to respond.

Those who answered in the negative were further asked, “Is there any person in your home or workplace who smokes?” 45pc responded yes, 52pc said no and 3pc did not know or wish to respond.

The study was released by Gilani Research Foundation and carried out by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International.

The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 1,178 men and women

in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during 23 February – 03 March, 2019. The error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 percent at the 95pc confidence level.
