Pakistan to use facial recognition in video surveillance for better security

With increasing need for better security systems, Pakistan is reportedly moving towards better technology to ensure safety by integrating facial recognition technology in their video surveillance system.

A number of countries around the globe have already introduced biometric technology into their security systems. In order to keep up with them and to upgrade Pakistan’s video surveillance system, local media reports suggest that the Ministry of Information and Telecommunication is working on introducing facial recognition system, which would be an added value to video surveillance in metro cities.

Conventional means such as passwords, keys and smart cards are used to secure a facility in Pakistan. Official sources from 'Ignite' (previously known as National ICT R&D Fund) reported that these techniques can fail to fulfill the purpose as they are more prone to hacking.

New satellite from China will improve communication in Pakistan’s remote areas

The project named ‘Design and Development of an FPGA-Based Multi-Scale Face Recognition System’, was developed by PAF-KIETS and would cost approximately Rs. 13.84 million.

The video system surveillance system is equipped with high-speed FPGA-based multi-scale face recognition system via Linear Binary Pattern (LBP) and it will be more effective, secure and cheap when compared to the previous methods used for security reasons.

The sources said that apart from adding value to international research scenario will also be a great contribution to the country as a whole.

Although official word on when and where the system will implemented is still not out, it will definitely be a step up for the country’s security system, reported Tech Juice.
