Former prime minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairperson Benazir Bhutto on Friday welcomed the announcement by President General Pervez Musharraf that all Madaris and schools would be registered by December this year and a special cell would be established to carry out this task.
In a statement issued here, she said that the PPP welcomed General Musharraf's pledge not to allow banned organisations from operating under a new name. She said Madaris education should be reformed. The former prime minister said that a move would be welcomed by all those who are concerned about Pakistan's image abroad as well as the stability and well being of the country itself. She said that Islam is a religion of peace and harmony and it was important that our Madaris were reformed so that the education imparted in these schools truly reflects the peaceful traditions of Islam and Islamic teachings.
