  • May raw sugar was up 0.37 cents, or 2.2%, at 17.10 cents per lb.
  • July New York cocoa rose by $8, or 0.3%, to $2,377 a tonne.

  • The tender had closed on Tuesday and the lowest offer was reported to be $447 a tonne c&f.
  • The Pakistan government in July 2020 approved sugar imports to meet a shortage and cool prices after production fell below consumption levels.

Asian food trader Wilmar sees Brazil sugar output falling sharply

  • Wilmar expects Brazil's center-south cane crop to fall to 530 million tonnes in 2021/22, compared with 605 million tonnes in the previous season, with sugar production dropping to 31 million to 33 million tonnes from 38.5 million tonnes.
  • Raw sugar prices jumped more than 3% in New York this morning, underpinned by bad weather for crops in Europe and in Brazil.

India's sugar demand falters during peak season due to COVID-19 curbs

  • The second wave of coronavirus has been disrupting the market during the peak demand season. Purchases by bulk buyers have been falling.
  • Sugar demand, which usually rises by more than 1% each year, fell 0.8% in 2019/20 to 25.3 million tonnes because of one of the world's strictest lockdowns imposed last year in March.
