"Those votes were cast properly, legally, constitutionally, but seven senators of the Senate of Pakistan were purposefully disenfranchised and Mr. Gillani, despite winning, has still not sat on that seat.”
Sanjrani received 48 votes while Gilani secured 42 votes. However, seven votes were rejected.
PTI has fielded Sadiq Sanjrani and Mirza Muhammad Afridi, while the joint opposition has nominated Yousaf Raza Gillani and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri for post of Senate chairman, deputy.
The development came hours after the Supreme Court of Pakistan opined that the Senate election is held "under the Constitution" and thus cannot be conducted through an open ballot, as per the government's demand.
The proposal was tabled by Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani to the opposition lawmaker Ghafoor Haideri.
Matters relating to upcoming senate elections and other issues of bilateral interest came under discussion during the meeting. On the occasion, MPAs of Balochistan National Party (Mengal) were also present.
