Former petroleum minister and senior politician of Pakistan Peoples Party leader Dr Asim Hussain has been reappointed as the chairperson of the Sindh Higher Education Commission (HEC) by the provincial government.

A notification was issued earlier this week by Sindh chief secretary which reads, “In continuation of this department’s notification of even number dated 28.1.2014 & in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 5 (1) of the Sindh Higher Education Commission Act-2013, the Chief Minister Sindh/ Controlling Authority has been pleased to re-appoint Dr Asim as Chairperson, Sindh Higher Education Commission for one more similar term.”

Following this decision, Federation of All Pakistan Academic Association has announced to stage a protest against the re-appointment of Dr Asim as the chairperson of HEC, local media reported.

Dr Asim was indicted by an accountability court in the Rs.460 billion corruption reference. His name was removed for one month from the Exit Control List in August 2017, after he filed an application to the Supreme Court to remove his name which had been placed in November 2015.

Dr Asim has also been accused of providing treatment to members of banned outfits at his hospital.
