The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) stopped Malir Cantt former Senior Superintendent Police Rao Anwar from fleeing the country early Tuesday morning at Benazir International Airport, Rawalpindi.

According to local media, he was barred from leaving the country by FIA, as he is involved in an ongoing investigation against him regarding the‘extrajudicial murder’ of Naqeebullah Mehsud. Anwar was stopped from boarding an international flight, however, was not taken into custody and was allowed to leave the airport.

The suspended SSP has twice failed to appear before a three-member inquiry committee, headed by Counter Terrorism Department Additional Inspector General (IG) Sanaullah Abbasi and formed by Sindh IG Allah Dino Khawaja.

Naqeebullah, a 27-year-old native of Waziristan, was killed along with three other suspected terrorists on January 13, in an alleged encounter with a police team headed by Anwar. However, Naqeebullah’s family claimed that the deceased was innocent and was killed in a ‘fake’ encounter.

Relatives of the deceased, residing in DI Khan, claimed that Naqeebullah was picked up by personnel in plain clothes from Sher Agha Hotel in Sohrab Goth on in the wee hours of January 3 and he was missing since then. On the IG’s orders, Anwar was also removed from his post on Saturday.
