The weekly inflation during week ended April 23 against April 16, 2020 on Week-on-Week (WoW) basis witnessed an increase of 0.62 percent for combine income group, from 125.16 points to 125.93 points, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistic (PBS) revealed.

According to the PBS's weekly inflation data released here on Friday, the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) on Year-on-Year (YoY) basis during (April 25, 2019 to April 23, 2020) witnessed an increase of 7.90 percent, from 116.71 points to 125.93 points.

The PBS has attributed the variations in the SPI to a rise in prices of following food items: potatoes 24.75 percent, onions 9.39 percent, bananas 4.72 percent, chicken 4.68 percent, garlic 2.65 percent, milk fresh 1.33 percent, rice Irri 1.15 percent, and curd 1.12 percent, with joint impact of 0.86 into the overall SPI for combined group of 0.62 percent.

While during the week under review, prices of following commodities witnessed a reduction: tomatoes 8.68 percent, eggs 5.89 percent, pulse gram 2.90 percent, pulse Masoor 1.49 percent, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) 0.85 percent, pulse Mash 0.58 percent, pulse Moong 0.56 percent, cooking oil 5kg 0.55 percent, vegetable ghee 2.5kg 0.51 percent, wheat flour 0.43 percent, vegetable ghee 1kg 0.12 percent, and sugar 0.01 percent.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 14 (27.45 percent) items increased, 12 (23.53 percent) items decreased and 25 (49.01 percent) items remained constant.

On YoY basis, prices of the following items witnessed an increase: potatoes 142.90 percent, pulse Moong 91.43 percent, pulse Mash 61.95 percent, pulse Masoor 45.75 percent, garlic 44.65 percent, pulse gram 27.01 percent, cigarette 30.71 percent, vegetable ghee 1kg 28.74 percent, Gur 30.47 percent, vegetable ghee 2.5 kg 27.38 percent, sugar 21.78 percent, cooking oil 5kg 21.26 percent, bread plain 20.69 percent, Sufi washing soap 18.65 percent, long cloth 15.93 percent, shirting 15.11 percent, eggs 22.04 percent.

While on YoY basis, prices of following items witnessed a reduction: tomatoes 55.78 percent, chicken 26.17 percent, hi-speed diesel 8.36 percent, electricity for Q1 6.33 percent, onions 3.22 percent, bananas 1.8 percent, and petrol 2.23 percent.

The SPI for the monthly income group up to Rs17,732 registered an increase of 0.91 percent from 130.14 points to 131.32 points on WoW basis, and on YoY basis, it recorded an increase of 8.58 percent, from 120.94 points to 131.32 points.

For the income group with monthly income of Rs17,732-22,888, weekly inflation registered an increase of 0.82 percent, from 124.85 points to 125.87 points, while on an annual basis, it witnessed an increase of 7.85 percent, from 116.71 points to 125.87 points.

For the monthly income group of Rs22,889-29,517, the SPI went up by 0.72 percent, from 127.11 points to 128.02 points, while on annual basis, it went up by 10.99 percent, from 115.34 points to 128.02 points.

Weekly inflation for the income group with monthly income of Rs29,518-44,175 went up by 0.68 percent, from 124.13 points to 124.97 points, while on annual basis, the SPI for the above income group went up by 10.13 percent, from 113.47 points to 124.97 points.

For the income group of Rs44,175 or above monthly income groups, weekly inflation registered a growth of 0.52 percent, from 126.67 points to 127.33 points, and on annual basis, the SPI for the above income group went up by 7.12 percent, from 118.87 points to 127.33 points.

An analysis of the PBS data and market prevailing prices revealed that there are slight differences in the prices of various items as the PBS has mentioned wheat flour price at Rs873.48 per 20kg bag or Rs43.67 per kg, while ex-mill wheat flour price is Rs700 per 25kg bag or Rs46.66 per kg, which in retail market is being sold at Rs730 per 15kg bag or Rs48.66 per kg.

Moreover, the PBS has mentioned retail price of moong pulse at Rs282.21 per kg but in retail the commodity costs Rs300 per kg.

Similarly, red chilli price has reached Rs30,000 per 40kg from Rs21,000 per 40kg in wholesales market but the PBS has mentioned retail price of 200 gram pack chillis at Rs158.57 per pack, which is below the wholesale price.

Moreover, the PBS has mentioned Maash pulse price at Rs250.35 per kg, which in retail is available at Rs270 per kg.
