FM Shah Mahmood, UN Chief Antonio Guetteres discuss coronavirus

• Qureshi also welcomed Guetteres's initiative to establish the emergency $ 2 billion Covid-19 Response and Recovery Fund.

Foreign Minister (FM) Shah Mahmood Qureshi discussed on Friday the novel coronavirus with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guetteres and the ways to mitigate its impact.

During the telephonic call, both leaders agreed that the pandemic was one of the most challenging crises to confront humanity since the Second World War. Qureshi also welcomed Guetteres's  initiative to establish the emergency $ 2 billion Covid-19 Response and Recovery Fund.

"Highlighting the perils of the socioeconomic fallout of the pandemic, Foreign Minister Qureshi in particular sought the Secretary General’s support for debt relief for the developing countries as well as additional efforts to combat the flight of capital and ensuring financing for Sustainable Development Goals," a statement by the Foreign Office said.

The FM also briefed the UN chief about India's latest domicile law in Indian-occupied Kashmir. Qureshi urged the UN and international community to take steps to prevent India from changing the demography and distinct identity of IoK.
