The Consumer Price Index (CPI) on year-on-year (YoY) basis recorded an increase of 12.4 percent in February 2020 against the same period of 2019, the monthly review of price indices released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) revealed Monday.

The PBS said that on month-on-month (MoM) basis, the CPI with base year 2015-16 during February 2020 against January 2019 at national level witnessed a reduction of 1.04 percent from 133.03 points to 131.64 points, while on annual basis the CPI jumped up from 111.12 points to 131.64 points, which reflects an increase of 12.4 percent. The CPI inflation urban increased by 11.2 percent on YoY basis in February 2020 as it went up from 118.08 points in February 2019 to 131.32 points, while on MoM basis urban CPI in February 20120 against January 2020 went down by 1.1 percent from 132.77 points to 131.32 points.

The CPI inflation rural increased by 14.2 percent on YoY basis in February 2020 against February 2019 as it went up from 115.68 points to 132.13 points, while on MoM basis rural CPI decreased by 1 percent and went down from 133.42 points in January 2020 to 132.13 points in February 2020.

Meanwhile, Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) based inflation on YoY basis increased by 14.5 percent from 116.73 points in February 2019 to 133.68 points in February 2020, and the MoM basis SPI recorded a reduction of 0.79 percent from 134.74 points in January 2020 to 133.68 points in February 2020.

Wholesales Price Index (WPI) based inflation on YoY basis increased by 12.6 percent from 127.15 points in February 2019 to 143.18 points in February 2020, and on MoM basis the WPI reduced 0.8 percent from 144.34 points to 143.18 points.

Core inflation measured by non-food non-energy Urban CPI (Core NFNE) increased by 8.0 percent on YoY basis in February 2020 as compared to an increase of 7.9 percent in the previous month and 7.1 percent in February 2019. On MoM basis, non-food non-energy Urban CPI (Core NFNE) increased by 0.2 percent in February 2020 as compared to increase of 1.1 percent in the previous month, and an increase of 0.2 percent in corresponding month of 2019. Core inflation measured by non-food non-energy Rural CPI (Core NFNE) increased by 9.4 percent on YoY basis in February 2020 as compared to an increase of 9 percent in the previous month and 6.4 percent in February 2019.

On MoM basis, non-food non-energy Rural CPI (Core NFNE) increased by 0.5 percent in February 2020 as compared to an increase of 1 percent in previous month, and an increase of 0.2 percent in corresponding month of 2019.

Core inflation, measured by 20 percent weighted trimmed mean Urban CPI (Core Trimmed) increased by 9.7 percent on YoY basis in February 2020 as compared to 10.3 percent in the previous month and by 6.7 percent in February 2019.

On MoM basis, 20 percent weighted trimmed mean Urban CPI (Core Trimmed) increased by 0.1 percent in February 2020 as compared to an increase of 1.2 percent in the previous month and an increase of 0.2 percent in corresponding month of 2019.

Core inflation, measured by 20 percent weighted trimmed mean Rural CPI (Core Trimmed) increased by 12.8 percent on YoY basis in February 2020 against 12.7 percent in January and by 6.2 percent in February 2019.

On monthly basis, 20 percent weighted trimmed mean Rural CPI (Core Trimmed) increased by 0.6 percent in February 2020 as against 1.9 percent increase in January and an increase of 0.3 percent in corresponding month of 2019.

Prices of following food items witnessed an increase on YoY basis: onions 102.75 percent, pulse moong 83.59 percent, potatoes 83.24 percent, fresh vegetables 61.89 percent, pulse mash 51.05 percent, sugar 36.9 percent, vegetable ghee 33.57 percent, gur 33.38 percent, wheat 29.96 percent, cooking oil 26.89 percent, pulse gram 24 percent, beans 23.68 percent, pulse masoor 21.57 percent, wheat flour 17.36 percent, mustard oil 15.49 percent, chicken 14.52 percent, meat 13.28 percent, tea 9.66 percent, fish 9.4 percent, and rice 8.47 percent.

According to the PBS, on YoY basis tomatoes price witnessed a reduction of 61.04 percent, and eggs' prices witnessed a reduction of 10.3 percent on YoY basis.

Prices of following non-food items witnessed an increase on YoY basis: Gas charges 54.84 percent, motor fuel 26.82 percent, drugs and medicines 18.82 percent, construction input items 17.86 percent, liquefied hydrocarbons 16.23 percent, and woolen cloth 14.74 percent.

While on annual basis, only electricity charges witnessed a reduction, which dipped down by 4.09 percent. On MoM basis prices of following food items witnessed an increase: vegetable ghee 13.15 percent, cooking oil 10.27 percent, sugar 8.45 percent, mustard oil 4.25 percent, fresh fruits 4.16 percent, beans 3.89 percent, chicken 2.35 percent, pulse moong 2.27 percent, and pulse mash 1.14 percent.

Prices of following food items witnessed a decrease on MoM basis: tomatoes 60.27 percent, eggs 26.36 percent, potatoes 12.91 percent, fresh vegetables 11.48 percent, onions 8.79 percent, wheat flour 5.29 percent, wheat 3.52 percent, pulse gram 2.34 percent, and besan 2.33 percent.

Prices of following non-food items increased on MoM basis: Carpets rates went up by 3.28 percent and solid fuel rates jumped up by 1.19 percent. While on MoM basis, prices of following non-food items decreased: Liquefied Hydrocarbons 13.53 percent and electricity charges 13.48 percent.

On account of WPI, prices of following items on YoY basis witnessed an increase: potatoes 116.22 percent, vegetables 55.27percent, cotton seeds 43.47 percent, sugar refined 34.81 percent, natural gas liquefied 29.87 percent, vegetable ghee 27.65 percent, wheat 25.09 percent, medicines 24.08 percent, kerosene oil 20.83 percent, wheat flour 20.56 percent, pulses 20.41 percent, diesel oil 15.72 percent, maize 15.61 percent, and poultry 14.13 percent.

On account of the WPI, prices of following items on YoY basis witnessed a reduction: eggs 12.46 percent, vegetables and fruit juice 4.64 percent, and furnace oil 4.58 percent.

On account of WPI, prices of following items on MoM basis witnessed an increase: sugar 4.62 percent, fresh fruits 4.46 percent, vegetable ghee 3.41 percent, medicines 3.07 percent, furnace oil 2.78 percent, bricks, blocks and tiles 1.1 percent, and vegetable oils refined 1.1 percent.

While prices of following items on account of WPI on MoM basis witnessed a reduction: Eggs 27.26 percent, vegetables 18.82 percent, potatoes 9.58 percent, fertilizers 6.4 percent, wheat 6.26 percent, pulses 5.05 percent, steel bar and sheets 4.11 percent, wheat flour 3.49 percent, and natural gas liquefied 0.73 percent.
